Maya Angelou is one of my favorite writers. The first book I read by her was "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." I loved it. So much of it reminded me of visiting the South as a child. However, it was the part where she refused to speak for five years that amazed me. Wow! What strength it showed. I know I could never have done it. I so wish I would have been blessed enough to have had the opportunity to speak with her personally. There is so much I would have asked. I would have loved to have been able to draw from her wisdom.
While "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" was the first book I read by her, "Me and Mom and Me" is my favorite. As the title suggests, it's a book about her relationship with her mother. I read it with my daughter while we were on vacation about 6 years ago. It was a wonderful read, and I dare say it helped bring us even closer than we already were. Peering through the window of Ms. Angelou's life through the pages of that book, we both realized that we don't have to be perfect or expect perfection from each other. Love is enough. Although her relationship with her mom was complicated, Ms. Angelou found the unmatched, unconditional mother's love to be steadfast and undeniable. It helped shape and mold her to become a great mother herself. A superb read.
